Understanding IBS

About Dr Nick Read

1-21-800x600Nick Read is a retired gastroenterologist, physiologist and nutritionist. During a long academic career, he held university chairs in Gastrointestinal Physiology, Human Nutrition and Integrated Medicine, published over 600 original papers and reviews and 11 books. These include the popular monograph, ‘Sick and Tired; healing the illnesses, doctors cannot cure,’ (Phoenix, 2006), which serves as a guide to help people understand and manage illnesses, like IBS, that have no clear cause or pathology, and more recently ‘Cooking for the Sensitive Gut’ in conjunction with Dr Joan Ransley.  .

Since retiring from his NHS and university posts, Dr Read has maintained a private practice in psychotherapy, and until December 5th 2016, was the Chair and Medical Adviser to The IBS Network , the national charity for people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.  Despite his longstanding role for the charity, the opinions expressed in this blog are his own and not necessarily the official views of The IBS Network.

A dedicated advocate of self-care, Dr Read attempts to delay the ageing process by fell running, wild swimming and infinite curiosity.
